Theoretically this is possible. It depends on the PDF reader program used and this program's features regarding interpretation of advanced features of the file format (embedded code). One should be able to prevent this if one doesn't use advanced PDF reader programs (like Adobe Acrobat Reader) but simpler ones which don't support these features but it would be more secure to additionally block the PDF reader program with a program based client firewall before opening the file. One could also just unplug the network cable or use the RFKILL switch to temporarily disable wireless to prevent that. CAUTION: This does not prevent code in the PDF file that is interpreted by the reader program to install malicious software and/or infect user's files. There are PDF files which embed malicious code that infects the system and/or user's files by abusing security holes in the PDF reader software.
