There are many different secret societies though. Knights of the Templar are a pretty old secret society that has basically shaped if not is the same thing as the free masons.

Motivation is possibly blackmail and control.
Power-hungry people are manipulated into doing things to children. They play along because they want the power, they join in the club. Some like it and keep it as an ongoing interest, some stop. But they are videotaped. Tapes are used for blackmail. That's the theory behind the Dutroux Dossiers, and there may be parallels here.
